Prospective Students

Ms. Xu teaches from her home in Torrance. All prospective students will be invited to meet with her before beginning any lessons to determine the student’s current piano level, what kind of curriculum will be appropriate, and whether the student and Ms. Xu are compatible with each other’s learning and teaching styles. Annual piano recital

All students are expected to perform at Ms. Xu’s annual piano recital which takes place each winter at the Torrance Church of the Nazarene (700 Maple Ave, Torrance, CA 90503). This gives students an opportunity to showcase all of their hard work and progress for friends and family, further develop their performance expression and skills, as well as build confidence playing before an audience.

Certificate of Merit Program

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the MTAC’s annual Certificate of Merit program, a statewide curriculum with focus on performance, technique, ear training, sight reading, and music theory, culminating in a written and performance evaluation in the spring. Ms. Xu’s students are regularly awarded Branch Honors as well as selection to perform in the annual MTAC State Convention Recital.

Torrance Memorial Piano Volunteer Program

For students in 9th grade and above who are interested in volunteering their talents to the community, Ms. Xu has connected several of her students to the Torrance Memorial Medical Center’s Piano Volunteer Program. Past volunteers have experienced great satisfaction and fulfillment in sharing their music with the hospital’s patients; Ms. Xu herself plays piano twice a week in the hospital’s lobby.
